During 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured I would book lodging after getting there, however when I arrived, a big convention was in town and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of bed down in the terminal – only to discover the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate all night. With no idea quite what to do and growing worried, I boarded a bus into town and found myself drifting near the casino, thinking it was a place to spend those hours in an establishment that stayed open all night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for acing an interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

The world needs more folks who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared lost because a woman saw me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired if I was OK. I explained my predicament and without hesitation she said I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, as that’s where my interview was the following day. She even offered me some free dinner: one sandwiches she brought back her part-time job. I had access to a hot shower and a secure location and secure to spend the night.

In retrospect, it’s clear to me the significant risk she took as a woman letting a guy who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. At that time I existed within a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to the potential danger. As a dad now, I’m amazed she offered that help – but still deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up go to the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of human compassion. My sincere desire is that the universe has rewarded her generosity tenfold. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
