"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. A host of famous admirers have publicly coveted the position.

The evidence suggests something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a inseparable trio. Their music videos often show them walking in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate others to make music."

Award Recognition

The band have called into a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes follow breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That recent resilience called for a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

One man broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global audience.

But Haim will always be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was four," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
