At least 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
