IS - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
