Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
