Our team is checking images and video posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location of where the images were from was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
