Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
