Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions shaking Tehran, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not immediately provide further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the region. Key events preceding this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
