Leeds Keep The Reds at Arm's Length to Earn Valuable Draw at Anfield
A pair of undefeated records continued intact at Anfield, but only one side could derive genuine satisfaction from the result. Leeds United executed a textbook strategy of frustrating and restricting Liverpool, with the maiden goalless draw of Arne Slot's tenure highlighting the persistent issues within the current title holders' latest recovery.
Resolute Display Earns Vital Point
A lacklustre scoreless stalemate, the initial in 84 matches for Slot's team, was primarily due to the immense solidity of the outstanding defensive duo Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk, combined with the home side's inability to break down a well-drilled visitors' unit. Liverpool were limited to hopeful opportunities, and a smattering of discontent could be heard around the stadium at the full-time whistle on a laboured display.
"Should I don't utilise the whole group and we have a fixture list like this, I would never do this," Daniel Farke stated. "For a player like Dominic I have to protect him. We all know his past couple of years was challenging. He is in incredible form but it's vital I look after him and sometimes the head needs to prevail over the emotion."
Liverpool's Frustration in the Final Third
Liverpool at first displayed more energy and precision than in recent matches, with the right wing-back prominent on the flank. Nevertheless, clear-cut opportunities were scarce. The home side's primary openings in the opening half involved forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a neat exchange with Curtis Jones, the French forward cut inside and drew a stop from keeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
- The Leeds' goalkeeper could not hold the shot, requiring a timely intervention from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz converting the loose ball.
- Ekitiké later raced clear onto a long ball but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; although not going down, his shouts for a spot-kick were waved away.
Spurned Chances Are Pivotal
Ekitiké's evening worsened when he did not manage to find the target with his best opening. Connecting with a pacy Frimpong cross in the six-yard box, the striker misdirected a header that struck the goalkeeper while with an open goal.
At the other end, their clearest opportunity came from an Alisson error. The experienced keeper sent a wayward clearance directly to disruptor Ethan Ampadu, whose instant shot returned down the centre was gathered by the alert goalkeeper.
Turgid Final Stages
The match descended into a bitty affair, low on incident. Dominik Szoboszlai, back from suspension, tested Perri from range. The subsequent rebound led to Ampadu handling the ball, giving the hosts a set-piece in a promising area, which Wirtz wasted into the wall.
Slot made a triple substitution to bring impetus, and moments later Virgil van Dijk came close to heading his team in front from a corner, his header bouncing just past the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had continued his scoring run for Leeds in the closing stages, but his finish was ruled out for a marginal offside. Ultimately, the two sides had to accept a single of the spoils.
