Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
