Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
