The Greek tennis star Contemplated Retirement Amid Pain-Filled Campaign

A competitive moment for Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas was the 26th seed at last year's US Open

The tennis professional disclosed he thought about quitting the sport because of severe back issues during the 2025 tennis year.

At 27 years old, the player once ranked as high as third globally, finished as runner-up to Novak Djokovic in the finals of the 2021 French Open alongside the 2023 Australian Open.

Now ranked 36th in the world after a limited schedule post a second-round departure at the US Open this past summer, he stated continuous medical care is finally showing encouraging progress.

"My greatest anticipation is to observe how my training responds during actual training with regard to my injury," said Tsitsipas.

"My primary worry was whether I was able to finish a match," he added, explaining the pain had troubled him "over the last six to eight months."

"I would wonder, 'Am I able to play in another match without discomfort?'"

"I became truly frightened after the defeat in Flushing Meadows [to Germany's Daniel Altmaier]. I was unable to move for two days. That is the moment start reconsidering your career's future."

Tsitsipas further mentioned satisfaction regarding his current recovery plan following the completion of an extended period of pre-season training completely pain-free.

He is scheduled to compete for Greece at the team event, drawn against Team Japan led by Osaka and the British team captained by Raducanu. The competition will be held across Australian cities in early January, the week preceding the season's first major.

"My main goal for 2026 would be to stop worrying over completing bouts," he expressed.

"It is incredibly encouraging realizing you had a pre-season without pain – I wish for it to last. I aim to perform during the upcoming season and for the United Cup.

"The effort is invested. The crucial element is complete faith that I can return to my previous level. I will attempt everything to achieve that."
