The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
One of the co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner Unilever stopped the launch for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the business alongside his partner, disclosed that he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor as part of a personal series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Between Founders versus Corporate Owner
The recent development deepens the continuing tension among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain that Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, that mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new product line will be developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally created in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated how he will create additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years with the organization, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy had been compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
