Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered many other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report initial examinations indicate the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the incident," they added.
City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A senior official commented the vandalism rendered him without words and had to be resolved quickly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
